Gabor Csakany 1939-2010

After a brief fight with cancer earlier this year Gabor “Gabe” Csakany died on May the 27th 2010. Mr. Csakany was 71, He will be very much missed. Over the next months a retrospective of his work will be assembled and published here.

We live in a society of people who cannot see past the first nude and automatically relegate an artist marvelously comfortable in the world of the erotic in the same category as smut. Most viewers will not have the intellect to see the beauty therein. Many of Zoltan’s “erotic” art is much more landscape art than erotica. what a loss that many cannot see that. If you have not seen his work through those eyes, you should go back and look again.

Once you move past being stuck in “smut mode” appreciate his landscapes, his sensitive portraits of family members and strangers alike. Most will not know that Zoltan was blind for several years. He is on his second set of eyes. something which explains his treatment of a subject being radically different than anyone still on their first set of eyes.

I had the privilege of knowing him all through his career as a photographer and videographer. I knew him when he was blind. Still tracking wildlife camera in hand though he could barely make out the subject. Often we feared for his life. For Zoltán life without being able to take photos or paint is not living at all.

Zoltan has worked on some rather impressive installations of his own work., notably a cityscape mural for Sears in Toronto, he has exhibited in the Netherlands, Canada and the US. For some time he worked at the Panonia film Studios in Budapest. Zoltan shot fashion, furniture and families, all with his special slightly off to the side vision of the world.

I wish him well with his coffee table book of his erotica and with his other ventures, his acting career and his web site (www.nomoredogfoodfordinner.com)”
